The Do-Over by Lynn Painter
It’s been over a month since my last romance novel, and I can truly say I’ve missed my time away. The Do-Over by Lynn Painter was the perfect way to start my month. Young adult romance is the gateway to a reading addiction for many, and I can see why. It’s lighthearted and hilarious, and I can finish one of these novels in one sitting because they are so amusing.
At first, I was hesitant to pick up this book because of the title. I thought “The Do-Over” sounded a lot like a second-chance romance, which I don’t personally enjoy, but when I finally got around to reading the synopsis, I was excited. Time loops are such a fun way to add a bit of magic to a story, but if done wrong, they can become repetitive. Thankfully, Lynn Painter does no wrong. Watching Emilie miserably fail on her first Valentine’s Day is hilarious, and watching her try to fix February 14th is even funnier. But my favorite part of The Do-Over is Emilie’s Day of No Consequences (DONC). She and Nick are such a cute duo, and their wild activities were so much fun to read about—I especially loved the impromptu promposal. And let’s not forget about Nick, the perfect teenage love interest. He had such a grumpy, unapproachable exterior, but once Emilie cracked him open, he was the sweetheart we all needed.
This is my third Lynn Painter novel I’ve read, and she hasn’t let me down yet. I read another one of her YA novels, Better Than the Movies, and I have to say, she writes young adult so well. Sometimes, YA can be a bit much, as authors try to make it too “relatable” and shove slang and references into every crevice of a book. That kind of writing is so difficult for me to get through, and in a few years it sounds very outdated; fortunately, The Do-Over didn’t have this problem.
If you’re not a fan of young adult but want to give Lynn Painter a try, she has quite a few adult romances. I read Mr. Wrong Number a few months back and I enjoyed it immensely. The Love Wager and Betting on You have also been on my TBR for quite some time, so hopefully I’ll get around to reading those soon! All in all, if you love sweet, silly romance books, you will love The Do-Over.
Thanks For Reading!
